P.S. I’m sorry this photo has such a weird bluish tint. Sometimes that happens and it’s the paper or the ink, but in this case it’s definitely just user error — I took the phone on a fairly sunny afternoon but I was indoors, facing away from the window. Next time, I’ll adjust.
This past week, I realized what I was actually trying to do with my novel draft, and that it wasn’t going to do what I wanted. I suppose if there’s good news, it’s that “what I wanted it to do” didn’t have much to do with Telling A Story or Being A Writer. I write to think and to make sense of things, and this time that led to a place where continuing to work on it will hurt more than help. The good news: I can walk away from its current story and try again, with many of the same elements and questions still in place.
I really don’t mean to be ambiguous about what happened, though I know this is. It’s just easier to talk about in closer conversation than the Internet Megaphone. If you’re at all interested in talking about what can seriously maim or kill a novel draft and tactics for trying again, hit me up one-on-one. I’m happy to chat.
In other news I just spent a gift certificate on bottles of ink and some samples, so there’ll be updates.
Soonishly, E
